Yin yoga for slowing right down

Slow, floor-based yin yoga: the balance to hard training.

  • Every Thursday19:30–20:30
  • No experience needed
  • Included in adult memberships

The practice

What is yin yoga?

Yin is a slow, floor-based style of yoga. Instead of moving from pose to pose, you settle into a handful of shapes, sitting or lying down, and stay there, supported and with your muscles as relaxed as you can let them be.

Each hold usually lasts a few minutes. That time is the point: it lets the stretch reach deeper into the hips, hamstrings and back, and it gives a busy mind something simple to do. It is slower and quieter than flow styles, with no rush and no performance.

It suits people who train hard and want to recover well, and people who don’t train at all and simply want to loosen up and switch off. No experience or flexibility needed.

  1. Long holds

A few minutes in each shape, so the body has time to soften rather than push.

  2. Close to the floor

Seated and lying poses, supported by props, for the hips, hamstrings and back.

  3. Quiet

Slower and stiller than flow styles: an hour to breathe and let the week go.

Yin yoga, Thursday evenings

Lydia teaches yin yoga at the academy on Thursday evenings: an hour of long, slow holds that open the hips and shoulders and undo a week on the mat. Open to members and non-members.

Your first class

  1. Arrive a few minutes early to find Unit 04, settle in and take a spot.
  2. Mention any injuries or anything that feels tender, so you can be shown a gentler way into a pose.
  3. Expect a slow pace. A handful of long, supported holds with time to settle into each. You can ease out of a pose whenever you need to.
  4. No experience needed. Nothing is competitive, and nobody is watching how far you fold.

What to wear and bring

  • Comfortable clothes you can move and lie down in
  • A warm layer or socks: you cool down when you are still
  • A bottle of water
  • Your own mat if you have one. Ask at the desk if you need a mat.

Good for training

The other side of a hard week

Most of Unit T Base is about effort: rounds on the mats, pads and bags. Yin is the counterweight. If you train in the building, long and quiet holds for the hips, hamstrings and back are a gentle way to recover between sessions.
